MiXplorer File Manager

MiXplorer is a powerful file manager. It can access cloud resources like Google Drive, Dropbox and One Drive, remote folders like Webdav and ftp, and local network folders like Samba. The powerful app manages to remain somewhat free of clutter in spite of all these capabilities. It’s extra configurable, allowing multiple ways to do many of the things this app can do.

It has a default screen when opening the app, and this has shortcuts to locations and to organized lists of resources, such as audio files or videos. This is configurable; the app allows removing any of these shortcuts or adding new ones. There’s a menu under the button in the top left corner that offers a mostly unrelated screen of more shortcuts, editable independently from the home screen.

Tasks I’m used to accomplishing on a Windows computer; moving folders and files around, renaming, generally organizing things, are nearly as efficient to do with MiX. Moving lots of files from a remote cloud resource to a local network share, or from Dropbox to Google Drive, it feels like the sky is the limit. The app doesn’t break a sweat getting things done, and even the way the progress dialogues are presented is a nice experience.

Performing organization tasks like moving folders at first is perhaps a little confusing, because it’s rather nonstandard, but I find it really efficient. You select files or folders and find buttons on screen to start the task, such as moving the content. Then, you navigate to where you want to move it. At the top of the screen, next to the title, is a tasks button that may say something like “1 tasks.” Tapping on this shows the task you started, and you’ll have the option to commence the move or copy, bringing it to the current location. A bit like copy and paste on a computer.

The Play Store version of this app, MiXplorer Silver, is a paid app. The developers of this app, at mixplorer.com, offer the app for free. When sideloading it from there, not all features are already included. They offer plugins that you can easily install to bring full functionality. The Play Store version has all of those plugins already included, and allows users to support development of the app.

I had the free version fully configured on my device, and like it so much that I couldn't help but buy it.

I haven't noticed any unlabeled buttons. I found the file selection progress reasonably easy, and the file lists are refreshingly clean without needing to swipe extra times to move between files and folders. I mostly use Google TalkBack, and this app is a pleasure to use with that.
