About Us

Welcome to Accessible Android’s About Us page, where our dedicated team of visually impaired Android users is on a mission to make Android more accessible and user-friendly for everyone. Explore our journey, meet our passionate team, and discover how we empower blind individuals in the Android ecosystem.

Background

Android is the operating system found on phones, tablets, and various other devices. It is favored by many for its open and customizable nature. However, despite its popularity, many blind users were hesitant to try it, and if they did, they struggled to find resources tailored to their needs, particularly in written form. This lack of awareness about Android’s accessibility left many blind individuals without the information they needed when choosing a new phone or tablet.

Who we are? Get to know About Us

About Us - Photo of a diverse group of people, including a blind woman using a white cane and a blind man with a guide dog, sitting together at a table. They are exploring Android devices, with some reading articles and others navigating through apps. On the table, there are various Android smartphones and tablets. A large screen in the background displays the text 'Accessible Android: Empowering Every User'.

We, a group of passionate visually impaired Android users, initially from Turkey, decided to take a step to address this issue. What started as a local initiative eventually transformed into an English-language website serving an international audience with ambitious goals.

On March 5, 2022, we proudly launched our local website, naming it “Erişilebilir Android,” which translates to “Accessible Android.” This endeavor was entirely self-funded and driven by our dedication.
The project evolved into a hub for visually impaired Android users of all experience levels, from novices to seasoned developers. In addition to the website, we created a podcast and a YouTube channel to provide Android-related content that meets the diverse needs of the visually impaired community.

OnSeptember 24, 2022 we achieved another milestone by launching our Accessible Android App. This app was thoughtfully designed to enhance the accessibility and reachability of our content, making it even more user-friendly.

On March 2, 2023, we took a significant step by joining forces with the esteemed team at the “Blind Android Users Podcast,” sharing a common mission: “making Android accessible and user-friendly for all.”

We witnessed our small initiative expanding and growing until it became a powerful passion that continually propelled us forward. Then, on July 25, 2023, AccessibleAndroid.com became a fully independent English website serving users from all around the world.

Accessible Android is a project that views Android from the perspective of screen reader users. It is dedicated to informing, educating, explaining, and advocating for accessibility within the Android ecosystem.

Our Mission:

The mission of Accessible Android is crystal clear. We are dedicated to creating a platform that provides the entire blind community with the most current information about Android as an operating system and its specific accessibility features. Our goal is to share knowledge about Android devices through comprehensive reviews, empowering users to make well-informed decisions. We are committed to delivering articles and guides that cater to users of all levels, from beginners to advanced enthusiasts.
Furthermore, we compile a collection of accessible Android apps, making it convenient for users to explore them.

The goal of Accessible Android is not solely to discuss and praise what is available; it is also to advocate for what is missing. Therefore, we do not turn a blind eye to negatives, and we seize every opportunity to raise awareness among app developers about screen reader compatibility.

Accessible Android is a project created by the community for the community. It cannot live without the active participation of people. A useful comment, a constructive discussion, spreading the word, sending feedback, contributing with an app, article, review or even a small tip can make a difference. It helps the project achieve its mission and provides the necessary encouragement to improve and advance.
