Scanner Radio – Police Scanner

Listen to live audio from over 8,000 fire and police scanners, NOAA weather radio stations, ham radio repeaters, air traffic (ATC), and marine radios from around the world. Turn on notifications to receive alerts anytime a scanner has more than 2000 listeners (to find out about major events and breaking news).

FEATURES:

  • View scanners located near you.
  • View the top 50 scanners (those that have the most listeners).
  • View scanners added most recently (new scanners are being added all the time).
  • Add scanners you listen to the most to your Favorites for quick access.
  • Browse the directory by location or genre (public safety, aviation, railroad, marine, weather, etc).
  • Turn on notifications to be notified when major events are happening (details below).
  • Add Scanner Radio widgets and shortcuts to your home screen for quick access.

NOTIFICATION FEATURES:

Receive a notification anytime:

  • …any scanner in the directory has more than 2000 listeners (configurable).
  • …a scanner within a certain distance of your location has more than a certain number of listeners.
  • …a specific scanner has more than a certain number of listeners.
  • …a Broadcastify alert is posted for one of your favorites.
  • …a scanner within a certain distance from you is added to the directory.

Using the notifications feature is a great way to find out about breaking news events before they’re covered in the media.

Below are the benefits of upgrading to Scanner Radio Pro:

  • No ads.
  • Access to all 7 theme colors.
  • Ability to record what you’re hearing.

The audio you’re able to hear is provided by volunteers (and, in many cases, police and fire departments and 911 dispatch centers themselves) for Broadcastify and a few other sites using real police scanners, ham radios, weather radios, aviation radios, and marine radios and is the same as what you’d hear using your own police scanner.

Some of the more popular departments that you can listen to using the app include NYPD, FDNY, LAPD, Chicago Police, and Detroit Police. During hurricane season it can be useful to listen to ham radio “hurricane net” scanners which contain weather conditions and damage reports when hurricanes and tropical storms are approaching or making landfall as well as NOAA weather radio scanners. Browse the directory to find scanners from far away to hear what citizens in other parts of the country and the world are experiencing.

The Scanner Radio app is a perfect companion to the Pulse Point, Mobile Patrol, and Citizen apps as well as weather, hurricane tracker, and breaking news apps.

Accessibility and User Comments:

Fully accessible with an unlabeled button.

Scanner Radio is elegantly accessible. It utilizes no TalkBack actions, and their use, while not really necessary, could make performing some actions a bit faster.
The app offers 4 tabs at the bottom of the screen:

  • Browse
  • Events,
  • Favorites,
  • Settings.

The Browse tab displays 3 check boxes followed by the Search button at the top of the screen. The check boxes are:

  • Nearby,
  • Popular,
  • All.
Below those there's an on/off switch which controls alerts concerning breaking news. It controls whether or not the app can alert users when a major event is happening.
Below the switch we'll have a list of stations, followed by the number of their listeners, and if a station is covering an ongoing event, it gets displayed as an "active event," and the type of event, like "building fire," is also mentioned. The stations which have more listeners get displayed first.

Both in this tab and in other tabs users can double-tap and hold on a station to have the following options displayed:

  • Scanner details,
  • Add to favorites,
  • Configure alerting,
  • Audio archive.

Opening or playing each station, via a double-tap, also offers extra options and buttons such as Mute audio, Share, Equalizer, Stop, Amplifier, and Sleep timer. TalkBack's 2-finger double-tap can also be used to pause and resume playback. It's worth mentioning that when a station is paused or closed and you return to the app's main window, an unlabeled button appears above the Browse tab, near the bottom right corner of the screen, followed by the station name, and followed by the Play button. Double-tapping the unlabeled button brings up the "Now playing" screen, and double-tapping the Play button starts playback, without leaving the app's main window, and the button changes to "Stop button" afterwards.

The Events tab, Scanner Radio's second tab, also offers the Search button, at the top right corner of the screen, and the previous tab's on/off switch for breaking news alerts. Here events are divided into "active events" and "passive events," and the stations are displayed in each category according to the number of listeners. It's worth mentioning that headings aren't used to display active/passive events, so you should locate them via touch exploration or flicking.

The Favorites tab, empty by default, only displays the same Search button. Stations can be added to this tab. The Settings tab, Scanner Radio's fourth and final tab, also controls certain aspects of the app like the theme, and the rest of the settings have been divided into categories like General settings, Directory settings, Player settings, Alert settings, Advanced, Manage subscription, and Help.
