A bootloader is the software that initiates when a smart device is powered on, responsible for performing initial checks and loading the operating system. In a sense, it is similar to the BIOS on computers. Since the bootloader plays a key role in initializing the device, any incorrect operation or modification can potentially cause the firmware to malfunction or crash.
