Jieshuo screen reader version 20250124 is out. Here’s a quick look at what’s new in this version:
Text Input for Voice Assistant and Inquire by Voice Functions
It is now possible to interact with the voice assistant and the inquire by voice functions using text instead of speaking prompts and commands.
To enable this, go to Screen Reader settings, then Advanced sSettings, and open Voice Assistant and translation settings.
Check the option: “Switch to Text for Voice Assistant and Inquire by Voice functions.” Once enabled, activating the voice assistant or any voice inquiry function will
display a screen where you can type your prompt. When finished, tap OK to send it.
Note that currently, there is no easy way to switch between text and voice input without going to the settings and toggling the checkbox.
New Way to Inquire About Current Focus
Jieshuo has added another way to send a prompt related to the current focus. To enable it, go to Voice Assistant and translation Settings, found in
Advanced settings, and check “Enable touch and hold to inquire about current focus.”
After enabling the feature, focus on any item on the screen, touch its actual position, and keep your finger on the screen. By default, you can speak your prompt to send its
text along with a screenshot of the current focus. However, if text is set as the default interaction mode (as mentioned above), you will need to type the prompt instead of
speaking it.
Changing Back and Recent Apps Gesture Behavior in Textboxes
Jieshuo uses the swipe right then left gesture with one finger for the back action and a swipe left then right gesture for recent apps. When focusing on a textbox, these gestures
are modified by default:
- The swipe right then left gesture reports the number of inserted characters.
- The swipe left then right gesture spells the textbox content.
To disable this behavior and keep the gestures performing their default functions at all times, go to Operation settings, then gesture default
settings, and uncheck “Modify back and recents gestures in textboxes.”
Automatic On-Screen Window Switching
The new version of Jieshuo can now automatically switch to the next available on-screen window when reaching the last element of the current window. This includes moving
between the main app window, navigation bar buttons, and status bar items.
To enable this, go to operation Settings then Navigation settings“Automatically switch between Onscreen windows.”
Show All Nodes and Segment Splitting Function
Jieshuo introduces a new function found in the main menu, which can also be activated via the voice assistant or assigned to a gesture. This function, called “Show All
Nodes,” displays all items available on the screen. Double-tapping any item activates it.
Long-pressing a node reveals the new Segment Splitting mode, which allows focusing on portions of an item. After a long press, specify the number of segments the node should
be divided into. The screen will then display the segments instead of the original item. Double-tap any segment to activate that part.
While this feature is not often needed, it can be useful for items that have multiple functions but are interpreted by the screen reader as a single focus. For instance, when a
sighted user can tap portions of an item for different functions, this new Segment Splitting mode enables a screen reader user to tap a specific portion with precision.
Bug Fixes
The release includes the usual bug fixes and crash resolutions. One notable fix mentioned in the changelog addresses a crash when using the timer.
