Jieshuo screen reader offers several methods to answer and end calls, including dedicated functions. Here, I’ll briefly discuss Jieshuo’s answering and ending calls feature.
Answering and Ending Calls in Jieshuo Screen Reader:
Using Shortcut Gestures:
Shortcut gestures in Jieshuo can be utilized to answer calls by navigating to Screen reader settings, then opening Operation settings and selecting “Gestures default settings”. There, the “shortcut gestures settings” section should be activated, where the checkbox for “Use shortcut gestures to answer and end calls on the incoming call screen” can be found. When this option is checked, the right shortcut will be used to answer the incoming call and activate the speaker in the ongoing call, while the left shortcut will be used to reject the incoming call and end the ongoing call.
Using Dedicated Functions:
In the stable Jieshuo version released on May 1, 2024, users have access to two new functions: “Answer call” and “End call”. These functions can be activated from the main menu or assigned to gestures like other functions. “Answer call” is for accepting incoming calls and activating the loudspeaker during active calls, while “End call” is for declining incoming calls and ending active ones.
Supported Apps:
Answering and ending calls isn’t limited to traditional phone calls; it also extends to some VOIP apps. For example, WhatsApp calls can be answered and ended using this feature, offering added convenience for users on Android 14, where WhatsApp incoming calls appear in a small portion of the screen when it is unlocked. Additionally, the “Play pause” function, available in both Jieshuo and TalkBack screen readers and assigned by default to the double tap with two fingers gesture, doesn’t work with WhatsApp calls.
Another tested app is Telegram, which is known for not supporting the play pause function, not only on Android 14 but also on previous Android versions. While these apps have been tested, the feature may also work with other apps. You can always test it with the apps you use to determine its compatibility.
Notes:
- The functionality of the “Answer” and “End Call” options may vary depending on the phone model and Android version. Users can utilize them where they work reliably.
- If you encounter issues with using shortcut gestures to answer calls, consider disabling other functions of the shortcut gestures from the settings to prevent potential conflicts.
- Although there’s an option to enable universal call control in shortcut gestures settings, it may not work consistently. It’s advisable to be on the screen where the incoming or ongoing call window is present when using gestures or functions. Personal testing confirms that this option has no effect on WhatsApp calls.
- It was reported that call-related functions don’t work before unlocking the screen with WhatsApp calls. Granting Jieshuo the “display over other apps or appear on top” permission resolved the issue in personal testing, but experiences may vary.
- Even if you don’t enable the “Answer” and “End Call” options, you can still answer calls using shortcut gestures if you’ve checked the “Use shortcut gestures to activate matching onscreen controls” option. By default, matching words include popular button names for answering and ending calls.
- If the “Answer” and “End Call” options aren’t working with traditional phone calls, consider granting Jieshuo permission to manage phone calls to see if it makes a difference.
- You can find additional settings related to phone call information by visiting reading settings > “caller announcement settings”.
