FUTO Voice Input

FUTO Voice Input is an application that adds voice input capabilities to your phone. It integrates with apps and keyboards that support the standard Android voice input APIs (ACTION_RECOGNIZE_SPEECH and Voice IME).

Details

All processing is done completely offline on your device, and your recordings are NEVER saved or sent anywhere. The app accesses the Internet only when you choose to download optional models. FUTO Voice Input respects your privacy.

You can use one of the following open-source keyboards that are tested to work:

  • OpenBoard, available on F-Droid (note: no longer maintained, has some issues after reboot)
  • AnySoftKeyboard, available on F-Droid and Google Play
  • HeliBoard, a fork of OpenBoard
  • Unexpected Keyboard (at least v1.23)

Everything you type is seen by your keyboard app, and proprietary commercial keyboards often have lengthy and complicated privacy policies. Choose carefully! The following proprietary keyboards may also work, but they are not recommended as they may not respect your privacy:

  • Grammarly Keyboard
  • Microsoft SwiftKey

Note: Not all keyboards are compatible with Voice Input. You need to make sure you’re using a compatible keyboard.

Some keyboards are simply incompatible, as they do not integrate with Android APIs for voice input. If your keyboard is listed here, you will need to use a different one as it is NOT compatible:

  • Gboard
  • Samsung Keyboard (One UI 6)
  • TypeWise
  • Simple Keyboard

Some non-keyboard apps also support voice input! Look for a voice button in Firefox, Organic Maps, etc. If your keyboard is listed as compatible but is opening the wrong voice input, you may need to disable the other one from your input method settings.

Accessibility and User Comments:

To use the app as a voice typing service, you need to enable it under your device's language and input settings. The exact location of this setting may vary depending on your device and Android version. I tested it with the Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard and was pleased with the results. Note that unlike Google Voice Typing, Futo works with Jieshuo.

Here are the steps to use the voice input feature:

  1. Enable the app in your language and input settings.
  2. Tap on an edit area that you want to voice type and display the keyboard.
  3. Long press the comma key to trigger voice input.
  4. Select "FUTO Typing" as your voice input service.
  5. Start speaking once you hear the beep.

After you're done talking, the app will process your voice and insert the text into the text area. You don't need to pronounce punctuation marks, unlike with Google Voice Typing.

All the button names are properly labeled for accessibility. However, in the main menu of FUTO, TalkBack announces "GO" after every menu item. I'm not sure if this is also visible on the UI.

Last Tested App version and Android version:

1.3.3. Android 14
