If you opt in to the Gemini app, it will replace your Google Assistant as the primary assistant on the phone. Some Google Assistant voice features aren’t available through the Gemini app yet — including controlling media and routines. You can switch back to Google Assistant in settings. Note that To use the Gemini app, you need to select Gemini as your assistant. The app won’t work if you keep using the old Google Assistant.

Accessibility and User Comments:
Although the app had significant accessibility issues in its early versions, it is now mostly accessible. As with most Google apps, no accessibility actions are supported, but the UI is generally easy to navigate. Buttons are labeled, and the main interface displays recent chats along with suggestions for new conversations, as well as the text box for typing, the image picker button, and the microphone button for voice input. You can navigate messages within a conversation and read them with TalkBack, with long-pressing providing additional options. Message-related options, such as "Read Aloud" and others, are found next to each message. It might be more efficient if these options were presented as actions or appeared only when long-pressing, as the current setup can be time-consuming, especially for users who rely on swiping gestures to review conversations. When double-checking a response, the results cannot be viewed using a screen reader, as the highlighted parts and other useful information are not displayed in an accessible way. Note for Jieshuo users: When using accessibility volume in Jieshuo, Gemini cannot capture your voice whether you use the microphone button or invoke it as the assistant. Typically, switching to media volume resolves the issue, but occasionally, force-stopping Jieshuo is necessary for Gemini to be able to capture your voice again.

I find the current exclusivity of Gemini w.r.t. Google Assistant at this time to be very annoying. Especially, since, at this time, Gemini’s capabilities fall short of services of Google Assistant that Gemini does not provide. I’d love to experiement with Gemini, but reenabling Google Assistant is a pain (too much fritcition). It is clear that Google wants to totally replace Google Assistant with Gemini, but they are far from making Gemini capable enough to do that. In the mean time they should be making it easier for Google Assistant and Gemini to co-exist. I’m also not appreciating that Google is sequestering conversational mode (no text exchange, just voice in and voice out) behind a paywall. For me conversational access is an accessibility issue. I need to be able to have a conversational interchange and not have to futz around with a screen reader and dictation and the clashes that occur far too often. While Google has made strides in the accessibility of Gemini, they still have a long way to go.
