Accessibility and User Comments:

Fully accessible with a couple of minor issues.

The app is accessible with TalkBack and its few unlabeled buttons are also detected and announced by the screen reader. Radio.net has 4 tabs accessible at the bottom of the screen: Radio, Podcast, Favorites, and Search. Both the Radio tab and the Podcast tab display the Search station, song, podcast and episode edit box located at the center of the screen towards the top. By default, the search results displays a tab called See all. However, you can select the Stations, Podcast or Episodes tabs to the right of it if you want to limit your results to radio stations, podcast series or episodes, respectively.

One annoying point about Radio.net is that TalkBack tends to say "Logo of the station that is currently selected or playing" before each station title, or "Logo of the podcast that is currently selected or playing" before each podcast title. So we should always hear these extra phrases before the intended station or podcast name. Moreover, in the search results the button to the right of each station or podcast is the Like button, an unlabeled button which gets properly labeled by TalkBack.

The Settings button, on the top left corner of the screen in all tabs allows us, apart from various other things, to modify the behavior of the app upon downloading or streaming with or without a Wi-Fi connection. I disabled the Stream only over Wi-Fi option there as I want my radio stations to be streamed when not connected to Wi-Fi, too. The Back button in the Settings window is unlabeled but TalkBack properly detects and announces it. The Search tab, the final and fourth tab of the app, provides more control over the search operation.

For instance, we can view our recent searches or see the latest search trends among users.

Some extra points worth mentioning:

  • 1. Radio.net also offers a free app with text and video ads. It can be used either freely or via a monthly/yearly subscription to make it ad-free. However, the Prime version, whose link is provided here, requires a one-time payment.
  • 2. At the time of this writing, Radio.net can play all BBC Radio stations which, given the way BBC tends to disable or alter its online streams outside the BBC Sounds app on a regular basis, is a huge bonus.
  • 3. Stations and podcasts can be bookmarked for easier access via the Bookmark option.
  • 4. The app responds well to TalkBack's two-finger double-tap gesture to pause or resume playback.

Last Tested App version and Android version:

5.13.3.1. Android 14
