Earpiece mode is a function in the Jieshuo screen reader that transfers the screen reader speech and sounds to the phone’s earpiece or the internal speaker used for calls. The feature may be helpful in certain situations when the user doesn’t want the audio to come out of the loudspeaker, especially when no earphones are available.
How to Activate and Use Earpiece Mode
Earpiece mode can be activated from the Main Menu, assigned to a gesture, or launched via the Voice assistant. When activated, the sound will come out of the earpiece. This includes Jieshuo’s speech and earcons along with other audio that the user plays. When the mode is active, the user can still use onscreen gestures and touch exploration, but if the phone comes closer to the face, accidental touches may be registered, which is a normal consequence.
Increasing and decreasing the screen reader’s volume is done by adjusting the call volume. At least on my phone, while earpiece mode is active, Jieshuo’s volume is linked to the call volume. This means that using the volume keys to increase or decrease the volume while a finger is on the screen doesn’t affect the volume in earpiece mode. Disabling earpiece mode is done using the same function that turns on the mode or by restarting the screen reader.
