Microsoft Edge for Android Now Summarizes YouTube Videos with Copilot

Microsoft has rolled out a new AI-powered feature to its Edge browser: YouTube video summarization via Copilot. This addition brings the power of generative AI directly into video playback, offering users a quick way to grasp key points from a video without watching the entire thing.

How it works?

When viewing a YouTube video in Microsoft Edge on Android, users can now access an AI-generated summary of the video’s content. This feature not only presents a concise text summary but also allows you to ask follow-up questions using Copilot—Microsoft’s AI assistant powered by OpenAI technology.

How to Use the Summarize Feature in Edge

If you’re curious to try it out, here’s how the process works:

  1. Open a YouTube link in the Edge browser on your Android phone.
  2. Tap the browser menu in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Scroll down to find the “Summarize” option.
  4. Tap “Summarize” to generate a video summary, which appears in the bottom half of the screen.
    • For users relying on Screen readers: The summary is fully readable with Screen readers./li>
  5. Tap on the summary text. A Copilot icon will appear in the top-left corner.
  6. Tap the icon to open the summary in full screen and ask further questions about the video content.

Real-World Performance

In testing, the feature summarized a 4-minute video in roughly 20 seconds. The follow-up questions were answered with a high level of accuracy, making this a genuinely useful tool for quick content consumption, research, or accessibility needs.

This feature marks another step in integrating AI into everyday browsing, and particularly enhances accessibility by offering a faster, more inclusive way to engage with video content.
