What’s New in Jieshuo Version 20250404

Jieshuo Screen Reader version 20250404 has been released. Here is a quick look at what’s new in this release.

The Addition of 2 New Functions

Jieshuo now includes two new functions in the list of functions that can be accessed through the main menu or assigned to gestures. Note that the names of these new functions are still in Chinese and cannot be translated at the time of writing.

  1. Current Focus Menu: This function shows options related to the item currently in focus, such as the available actions if it has actions, the adjust slider value if it is a slider, in addition to options related to the pronunciation of the current item’s text and the node properties. The feature itself is not new, as this menu is the same one you can reach when opening the main menu through the button to the left of the Cancel button. However, the name in the main menu is different—it’s shown as “Actions” if the item has actions, or “Edit the pronunciation of the currently focused element” in other situations.
  2. Take Screenshot of Current Focus: There is already an existing Jieshuo function called “Take a Screen Shot” that captures the entire screen. With the new release, a function to take a screenshot of the current focus is also included. When using either of the functions, the share menu is shown so the captured image can be shared with other apps.

New Sound Effects

The new Jieshuo release adds two sound effects that can be customized in the sound scheme in use. These indicate when the keyboard is shown and when it is hidden. Note that the names of these sound effects cannot be translated for now.

Interactive Elements Are Now Included in the Actions Navigation Type

Similar to TalkBack, Jieshuo now includes embedded links and other interactive elements—like usernames in Telegram and phone numbers in messages—as items in the actions navigation type. However, based on our testing, not all links are displayed. For example, links are not shown at all in the Tusky app. Also, in Telegram, where the link is sometimes shown twice (once with the word “click” before it and once without), usually only the one without “click” can be activated. But when showing links as actions, only the ones with “click” are displayed, meaning those links won’t be activated when pressed.

For now, it is still recommended to use the “Open an URL” function to interact with embedded links and elements. Another thing worth mentioning is that no links are shown when using the Actions dedicated function.

Bug Fixes

Jieshuo’s changelog points to several bug fixes, including:

  • Optimized power consumption (we cannot confirm or deny this ourselves).
  • Faster load times.
  • Fixed issues related to the absence of scrolling sound in some apps.
  • Fixed a conflict that could cause a crash when launching Jieshuo’s main and helper service (the TalkBack spoofer) together. We have not tested running both services simultaneously ourselves.
  • Fixed an issue with the absence of scrolling sound in some apps.

Note to Android 15 Users

When using Jieshuo on an S25+ running One UI 7 based on Android 15, there is noticeable lag. We cannot say for sure if this extends to other devices and brands, but it is important to keep in mind that Jieshuo might not be well optimized for Android 15-based UIs.

This post will be updated if we find any additional changes or issues worth mentioning.
