The ElevenLabs Reader app is, for many of those that are testing the app, one of the biggest Android releases we’ve seen lately.
While this is indeed true and really big, all the excitement was overshadowed, for us blind people, by the app’s inaccessibility in the form of totally unlabeled controls.
Absolutely all the buttons were unlabeled. You could either do mind mapping and try all of the buttons and see which one does which. Alternatively, at least with Jieshuo, you could focus a button, then open the actions menu. In there, the button was an action, so it was labeled that way. Not sure how TalkBack would’ve done it, I am the most rudimentary TalkBack user that’s there, using it just to setup my device and install/restore Jieshuo on the phone.
With all that out of the way, though, now there’s reasons to be happy! ElevenLabs Reader has been now made fully accessible. After reaching the developers on all of the sources there could be, on all of their feedback platforms, they saw it and were quick to label all of the buttons. No need for anymore complications, just use the app normally now!
In conclusion, the ElevenLabs Reader can now be celebrated as, likely, one of the biggest Android releases for these few months. In my personal opinion though, it’s more important even than the ChatGPT app release that happened back around the last summer.
Before I sign off, I would like you to be reminded that you can all preregister to test the app here. Leave feedback and let’s, together, improve the app and help those amazing developers iron out all the bugs that exist, suggest features and behaviors.
“Team work makes the dream work”, they say. Let’s really show how true this saying is!
