Character by character browsing mode in Jieshuo Screen Reader

Last updated on 27 August 2023

Jieshuo screen reader offers several ways to navigate and select text. “Character by character browsing” mode is one of those ways. it enables the user to conveniently navigate onscreen content by characters, words, sentences, or paragraphs, as well as select and copy text via gestures.

Using the “Character by character browsing” mode:

The default gesture to open character by character browsing mode is swiping left and then down. It is possible to change this gesture or access the mode from the main menu.

After focusing on the text you want to navigate, such as a message or the name of a home screen item, you launch the Character by character browsing mode.

When this mode is activated, you need to use gestures to navigate the text, select parts of it, copy or append the selection, or copy all the text.

List of gestures in Character by character browsing mode (all performed with 1 finger):

  • Swiping down: Next character.
  • Swiping up: Previous character.
  • Swiping right: Next sentence.
  • Swiping left: Previous sentence.
  • Swiping right then left: Next word.
  • Swiping left then right: Previous word.
  • Swiping right then down: Next paragraph.
  • Swiping left then up: Previous paragraph.
  • Swiping up then down: go to beginning of text.
  • Swiping down then up: Go to the end.
  • swiping left then down: Exit the character by character browsing mode.
  • Swiping down then right: Main menu.
  • Swiping down then left: Jieshuo’s voice assistant.
  • Swiping up then right: entering/exiting Selection mode.
  • Swiping up then left: Extensions menu.

Selection mode:

In selection mode, you use the same gestures to select as you use to navigate the text in the character by character browsing mode. For example, if you want to select by characters, you swipe down and up.
The direction you start from determines the direction of the selection. Therefore, if you select the next character, you use the previous character gesture to deselect it.

When you select or deselect something, you will hear checked or unchecked words to inform you about the state of the selection. To hear all of the currently selected text, you should tap the screen once with 1 finger.

To select everything from the point you are on to the end of the text, you use the swiping down then up gesture. To select from where you are to the beginning, you swipe up then down.

List of gestures that are different in selection mode:

  • Tapping the screen with 1 finger: Read the selected text.
  • Swiping down then right: Copy selected text.
  • Swiping up then left: Append selected text to previously copied text.
  • Swiping right then up: Copy all the text, not only the selection.

Notes:

1. The same gestures can be used to navigate texts in edit boxes with the same way to access the mode, which will be called “edit mode” if you are using the default gesture to open it.
2. When using sentence navigation Jieshuo will stop at commas because the comma is considered as one of the punctuation marks that end the sentence.
