Encountering an app with buttons that cannot be focused using a screen reader is frustrating but not uncommon. It’s known that Google itself may design apps that don’t fully adhere to accessibility standards, as seen with the recently released Gemini app. This app was published with a “send” button that, at the time of writing, is not focusable by either TalkBack or Jieshuo screen readers. The enhanced detailed focusing mode is a feature in the Jieshuo screen reader designed to address such situations.
What is the enhanced detailed focusing mode?
Enhanced focusing mode in Jieshuo is a paid function that allows users to focus more precisely on onscreen items, thereby enabling activation of certain buttons that are otherwise inaccessible using normal focus. This function can be activated from the main menu or assigned to a gesture.
When the enhanced detailed focusing mode is enabled, swiping between onscreen elements becomes more granular, allowing for the focusing of additional onscreen items. To disable the detailed focusing mode, you can either use the same function from the main menu or utilize the assigned gesture. Additionally, restarting Jieshuo returns browsing to the default focusing mode.
Notes:
- The enhanced detailed focusing mode can be a real saver when dealing with certain apps, such as those with unfocusable controls. However, using this function as a replacement for the default focus mode is not recommended, as it may separate some elements that are normally in one focus into several focusable items, which makes swiping between onscreen elements less convenient. It’s best to activate the mode only when necessary, such as when dealing with apps with unfocusable buttons.
- There is a free detailed focusing mode that you can enable from settings by navigating to “operation settings” in navigation settings. However, based on my tests, it doesn’t have any significant effect, meaning that you may not benefit from enabling it.
