How to add a new ringtone to your Android phone: My favorite method

Personalizing your Android device is one of the most enjoyable aspects of owning a smartphone. One way to do this is by setting a custom ringtone that reflects your unique taste and personality. While the Google Play Store offers a variety of ringtone apps like Zedge to choose from, there’s nothing quite like having a custom ringtone that sets your phone apart from the crowd. In this post, I’ll guide you through the simple process of adding a new ringtone to your Android device by showing you my favorite method.

Choose or Create Your Ringtone

Before you start, decide on the ringtone you want to add to your Android device. You can either choose from an existing audio file on your computer or create a custom ringtone using various audio editing tools available online. Ensure that the audio file is in a compatible format such as MP3, M4A, OGG, or WAV, as Android supports these formats for ringtones.

Connect Your Android Device to Your Computer

To transfer the chosen ringtone to your Android device, you’ll need to connect it to your computer using a USB cable. Once connected, go to your notifications and make sure your device is set to Transfer Files (MTP) mode, allowing you to access its internal storage.

Copy the Ringtone File to the “Ringtones” Folder

Locate the ringtone file on your computer and copy it to the “Ringtones” in the internal storage of your phone.

Set the New Ringtone

After copying the ringtone file to the “Ringtones” folder, disconnect your Android device from the computer. Now, open the Settings app on your Android phone and navigate to the “Sound” or “Sounds & vibration” section (the exact path may vary depending on your Android version).

Within the sound settings, find the “Phone ringtone” or “Ringtone” option. You should see the newly added ringtone listed along with other default options. Tap on your custom ringtone to set it as your default ringtone for calls.

You can apply the same method to customize your notification sound. But this time make sure to copy the audio file to the “Notifications” folder on your phone.

notes

There are many ways and apps to help you add a new ringtone, but this method is my favorite and works across all the Android phones, regardless of the OS version
