Resuming Browse by Touch or Speech Feedback and Browse by Touch in Jieshuo Screen Reader

Last updated on 10 October 2024

A screen reader changes how we interact with touch screens by using its own accessibility focus for navigating and activating on-screen elements, and by utilizing a set of on-screen gestures to perform its related available functions. When you want to pause this for any reason, you can do so when using the Jieshuo screen reader by selecting the “suspend browse by touch” function. While the browse by touch is paused, on-screen gestures and taps are passed directly to the system without the screen reader’s intervention. However, speech feedback will still be active. If you also want to pause speech feedback, you can activate the “Suspend speech feedback and browse by touch” function.

To suspend browse by touch quickly, you can, by default, use the simultaneous pressing of volume keys (pressing one volume key, then immediately pressing the other and releasing them together). In addition to this method, you can find both functions in the main menu, and you can assign another gesture to either of them.

Jieshuo has several options that specify when to resume any of the two functions; let’s explore them.

Customizing Resumption of Browse by Touch or Speech Feedback and Browse by Touch

Go to Screen reader settings, then tap “advanced settings.” Activate “operation settings,” where you can find, among other options, four related resuming options for browse by touch or speech feedback and browse by touch.

Allow Resuming Exclusively from Notification Shade

When checked, you can only resume browse by touch or speech feedback and browse by touch either by simultaneous volume key pressing or by tapping the notification that you receive when they are suspended. Note also that if you assigned a volume key press to suspending browse by touch or speech feedback and browse by touch functions, you can use the same key to resume them. If you want to benefit from the other available options, you need to uncheck this option.

Other Available Options

  1. Resume browse by touch or speech feedback and browse by touch when the screen is turned on: When this option is checked, it resumes suspended browse by touch or speech feedback and browse by touch when you lock then unlock the screen. Fully unlocking the screen is not necessary; being on the lock screen will be enough to resume the functions.
  2. Resume browse by touch or speech feedback and browse by touch when opening the notification bar with a 1-finger down swipe from the top of the screen:
Checking this option resumes the browse by touch or speech feedback and browse by touch automatically when you open the notification shade by swiping down from the top of the screen with one finger.
  3. The Resume browse by touch or speech feedback and browse by touch when a call is received: When checked, it resumes the browse by touch or both speech feedback and browse by touch automatically when you receive a call. Note that this works with regular phone calls, not with VoIP calls like WhatsApp calls.
