Highlights from the Samsung Unpacked Event: Revealing S24 Series and a Lot of AI

Samsung Galaxy S24 series phones have just been announced. As usual, they are coming in 3 variants: the vanilla S24, the +, and the Ultra.

Here are the Highlights from the Samsung Unpacked Event: Revealing S24 Series and a Lot of AI. Let’s find out what Samsung has in store for the S24 series.

The main theme of the Unpacked event was AI, as advertised for months before. The new phones look almost the same as their predecessors, with slight differences. In this article, we listed the key specifications and important AI features announced.

S24 series CPU, Storage, RAM, and Battery

S24 and S24+ come with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy in the US/Canada and Exynos 2400 internationally. S24 comes with a 4000 mAh battery, and S24+ offers a 4900 mAh battery. The storage options are 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB with 8GB RAM for S24, and 256GB and 512GB with 12GB RAM for S24+.

The S24 Ultra comes with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor, 256/512 GB, or 1 TB storage / 12 GB RAM.

Physical Details of S24 Series

This year’s Galaxy devices follow the same look, with the S24 Ultra featuring a titanium frame, Gorilla Armor, and a flat screen, while the S24+ comes with slightly oval corners. The S24 display expands to 6.2 inches compared to 6.1 inches for the S23, while the S24+ has a 6.8-inch display. The biggest screen is reserved for the Ultra model that is containing an 6.8-inch display.

Loudspeaker and Audio Features

The S24 series comes with stereo loudspeakers and no 3.5mm jack. All the devices are tuned by AKG and support 32-bit/384kHz audio.

AI features

Here are the Galaxy AI features that are somewhat related to accessibility.

Live Translate and Interpreter

One of the most impressive new Galaxy AI features on the Galaxy S24 series is Live Translate, which Samsung actually announced about a month ago. The feature uses AI to translate phone calls in real-time while you’re on the phone. This is handled via Samsung’s Phone app and can be enabled during any case with a tap of the “Call Assist” button that shows up when you are on a call. When using the feature, you’ll be able to select from a list of supported languages. From there, a quick disclaimer is read off, and then the call continues. Anything you say is translated into the caller’s language, and vice versa, and you’ll hear both sides of it. It all also happens on device, too.

Chat Assist

Built into Samsung Keyboard, “Chat Assist” is a feature with a few different functions. The first is Chat Translation, which as the name implies, can translate messages. This works in any chat app and is powered by the keyboard. Messages are translated on-device to show the original language and the translated one to ensure the whole conversation is understandable. Beyond that, Writing Style can take text you’ve already written and re-write it to expand, change the tone, or suit a specific use case such as social media. Finally, “Spelling and Grammar” is a supercharged spell check.

Transcript Assist

In Samsung’s voice recorder app, “Transcript Assist” will be able to transcribe a recording into text (including identifying speakers) and then let you translate that into another language or summarize the recording. It works really similarly to Google’s Recorder app on Pixels but can’t do any of the transcription in real-time.

AI on older devices

All of these new features will be available on the Galaxy S24 series, but what about older devices? Samsung has confirmed an initial list of devices that will be updated in the first half of 2024. Those are the S23 series, Galaxy Tab s9 series, Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5.

Software updates

Google surprised us last year with the Pixel 8 series getting an industry-leading 7 years of major updates. Now, Samsung is matching that with 7 years of updates on the Galaxy S24 series.
The Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra will all be eligible for 7 years of updates.
That includes security patches, which Samsung generally distributes monthly at first before slowing down over time, as well as major Android versions and feature updates, meaning that those devices will be updated through Android 21
