How to message someone on WhatsApp without adding them to your contacts

Last updated on 9 April 2023

If you need to send a message to a number on WhatsApp and don’t want to add them to your contacts every time, there are a few solutions. By following one of the steps below, you can send a message to a phone number without having to type random characters and add them to your contacts, as is often the case.

Someone has given you their number and you need to send them a message on WhatsApp. What do you normally do? You open the phone dialer, type in the number, add the number to your contacts, find the number in your contacts and send the message. Later, when you sit down to edit your contacts, you realise that you have saved a lot of numbers with random characters. You don’t need any of them. Let’s take a look at how you can easily send a message to someone on WhatsApp without adding them to your contacts:

Method 1: Convert the number to a WhatsApp link

Every phone number on WhatsApp actually has a web link version that can be contacted directly. If your phone number is +1 599 123 45 67, the direct contact web link for that number is wa.me/+15991234567.

So how do we remember this information? The method is simple. The link starts with wa.me/ and then continues with the US country code +1. Then the rest of the number.
In order To send a message to this number

  • Launch your internet browser
  • Focus on the address bar
  • Type wa.me/
  • Type the country code starting with +. +44 for UK, +1 for the USA, +90 for Turkey, +91 for India etc.
  • Type the rest of the phone number without any spaces
  • On the page that opens, press continue with WhatsApp.
  • Then WhatsApp will be launched with the messaging window, along with the particular contact..

Method 2: A little weird, but why not. Sending a message to yourself

You may know that you can send messages to yourself on whatsapp. This feature may sound interesting, but it has a point of making lives easier at many ways.
You can message someone you do not want to save in your contacts. In order to do this:

  • 1. Launch Whatsapp.
  • 2. Tap “new message”.
  • 3. Tap your name.
  • 4. Type the number that you don’t want to add to your contacts and tap send.
  • 5. Click on the number in the message you received from yourself.
  • 6. You can tap “call”, “add to contacts” or “send a message to number in question” from the options that appear.

Note: If the person you want to send a message to does not use whatsapp, you may see the “invite to whatsapp” option.

Method 3: Direct Message for WhatsApp app

This app, which is available on Google Play, lets you message a number on WhatsApp. You can type the phone number of the person in the number field and the message you want to send in the message field respectively. If you do not want to share numbers in this app, you can use one of the methods above.

My choice is to send a message to self as I wrote in the second method. This way, you can send a message via WhatsApp without adding a phone number to your contacts.
