Jieshuo+ vs. Jieshuo Lite: Differences and Which One Should You Choose

Jieshuo screen reader comes in two versions: Jieshuo+ and Jieshuo Lite. The Lite version is sometimes referred to as the “International” version on the GitHub page and by some users. If you’re wondering about the differences between these versions and which one to choose, let’s explore the main differences between Jieshuo+ and Jieshuo Lite.

Why Are There Two Versions of Jieshuo?

Jieshuo Lite is a stripped-down version of Jieshuo+. It is designed to be smaller in size and may perform better on low-spec devices. However, to achieve this reduced size, Jieshuo Lite omits several features and components available in Jieshuo+.

Key Differences Between Jieshuo+ and Jieshuo Lite

1. No Included TTS Engines

Jieshuo+ includes a version of the eSpeak text-to-speech (TTS) engine, available for all users. It also offers the Iflytek Chinese TTS engine, which speaks English with a Chinese accent and is exclusive to premium subscribers. Neither of these TTS engines is included in the Jieshuo Lite package.

2. No Offline OCR Engine

Jieshuo+ supports both online and offline OCR engines. The offline OCR engine can recognize text in several languages, but this feature is absent in Jieshuo Lite. Lite users can only access supported online OCR engines. Note that all OCR features are exclusive to pro subscribers.

3. No Offline Speech-to-Text Recognition Engine

Jieshuo+ includes a built-in speech-to-text engine used in its Voice Assistant feature, supporting both Chinese and English. This engine is not included in the Lite version. Logging into Jieshuo Lite and Jieshuo+ even on the same device generates a different ID for each version. Since a Jieshuo Pro license is tied to a specific ID, it is not possible to use both versions simultaneously without purchasing an additional license or switching the license between them. While some users have found workarounds for this issue, they are not guaranteed to work consistently.

Which Jieshuo Version Should You Choose?

If selecting a version based solely on the provided differences, the decision is straightforward:

• Choose Jieshuo Lite if you don’t need additional services like offline OCR, speech-to-text, TalkBack spoofing, or TTS engines and prioritize app size as an important factor.
• Choose Jieshuo+ if these features are essential to your usage.

However, the situation is more complex than it might initially seem. Several factors, such as responsiveness, potential security issues, and reliability, should also be considered.

Due to the removal of certain services in Jieshuo Lite, its performance may differ on specific devices. On lower-spec devices, Jieshuo Lite might offer better responsiveness, making it the preferable option if this difference is noticeable.

Potential Issues with Google Play Protect

There have been several reports of Google Play Protect flagging Jieshuo Lite as a potential security threat. While this could be a false positive, it is highly discouraged to disable Play Protect to install any app, as doing so poses a security risk.

In contrast, Jieshuo+ is less likely to be flagged by Play Protect, as many users can install it without issues. Although the exact reason for this discrepancy is unclear, Jieshuo+ might be a safer choice for those concerned about such warnings.

Losing the TTS Engine Switching for Free Users

Losing speech is one of the most frustrating situations a user can face, particularly for someone who is totally blind and lacks direct sighted assistance. In such cases, restarting the phone might not resolve the issue, and it could disrupt ongoing work. The switch TTS engine function in Jieshuo can be a lifesaver. This feature can be assigned to a gesture for quick access and can also be activated by placing a finger on the screen and long-pressing the volume-down key without lifting the finger, even on the lock screen.

While this function exists in both Jieshuo versions, free users face an essential limitation. They can only use the system TTS engine (the one set as default in the system’s text-to-speech settings) or the Jieshuo+ eSpeak engine. Since eSpeak is not included in Jieshuo Lite, this critical functionality is effectively unavailable in that version, which can be problematic when it’s most needed.

Present Bugs

Reliability is another important factor to consider. While it might seem logical that both Jieshuo versions would share the same bugs, this is not always the case. Some issues uniquely affect one version but not the other. Based on user observations, Jieshuo Lite appears to be more prone to such specific bugs.
