Screen State Reading Settings in Jieshuo Screen Reader

Screen State Reading Settings is a section of the Jieshuo screen reader reading settings where users can specify what should be spoken when locking or unlocking the screen. In this post, let’s take a look at the available options in this section.

What’s Included in the Screen State Reading Settings

To access the screen state reading settings, open “Screen Reader Settings”, then activate “Reading Settings”. There, you will find the desired section.

This section includes the following options:

  • Speak Screen Lock State When the Screen is Unlocked: When checked, Jieshuo will speak the current time when the user unlocks the screen. This time announcement occurs whether the user presses the power button, uses other methods to reach the lock screen (like the double-tap to wake option), or unlocks the device directly by touching the fingerprint sensor on devices that support this method. Note that checking this option is mandatory to hear the additional announcements that the user can specify when unlocking the screen. Additionally, the time reading is interrupted if Jieshuo focuses on an item and reads it before finishing the time reading.
  • Time Format: You can select between system default, 12-hour, and 24-hour formats, but according to my tests, this option has no effect, and the time reading is always based on the system default time format.
  • Always Read Battery Status: When checked, the battery level is announced after the automatic time reading when unlocking the screen. Remember that if the previous checkbox is not checked, the battery level won’t be announced. When the battery is low or the phone is connected to the charger, the battery level will be read along with the time, even if this checkbox is unchecked.
  • Read Unread Notifications Count: After reading the time when unlocking the screen, the number of notifications the user has is announced, and then Jieshuo will start reading them one by one. There is no way to choose to read only the number of notifications without reading their content. The only way to interrupt the reading is by interacting with the screen. This option doesn’t work if Jieshuo is not granted notification access permission.
  • Speak Screen Lock State When Screen is Locked: As the name implies, this checkbox decides if the screen locked message is spoken when the screen is locked.

There are also two sound effects for unlocking and locking the screen, which users who prefer sound feedback can set in the sound Schemes they are using.
